Why Drew needed better storytelling tools

Drew Felts is the college pastor at First Baptist Church Statesboro. After completing his undergraduate degree at Valdosta State University and his master's at New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary, he now helps college students deepen their faith. He loves weaving Tolkien references into sermons, is a self-proclaimed geek whose dog is named after a Jedi, and enjoys studying the first-century world of Jesus. Visit his church.

"Instead of having to dig through an entire book, to be able to pull out a single nugget of wisdom, it's so nice to just be able to pick out a card and it's distilled down already. And that in and of itself has been so valuable for me, the power of story when teaching is so important."

Hello, there what's up. My name is Drew Felts. I'm a college pastor.

So I work with college students all the time. And just wanted to take a minute to talk about Storyteller Tactics.

So I was a little hesitant to pick this up just because of the price. But let me tell you, since I've gotten these, the sheer quality of these things and the fact that instead of having to dig through an entire book, to be able to pull out a single nugget of wisdom, or go back and look at an outline I've done with something I've read.

It's so nice to just be able to pick out a card and it's distilled down already. And that in and of itself has been so valuable for me, the power of story when teaching is so important.

And for me just being able to use these, to help craft that, and have it in something that's a little bit quicker and a little bit more distilled has helped me so much teaching college students and engaging with them, and teaching the gospel.

So it's a great tool. If you're somebody who's teaching regularly, trying to communicate ideas, highly recommend, it's definitely worth the money.

From hesitation to daily use

Drew was initially hesitant about the price of Storyteller Tactics, but quickly discovered their value. As a college pastor who teaches regularly, he recognised that the power of story is essential for effective teaching and communication.

The cards provided him with instant access to storytelling wisdom. Rather than digging through entire books for single nuggets of wisdom, he could pick out a card and have the information distilled and ready to use. This streamlined his preparation process and improved his teaching effectiveness.

The teaching engagement challenge

Teaching college students requires more than just information—it needs compelling narratives that connect emotionally. Drew found that Storyteller Tactics gave him the tools to craft stories that would engage his students and make the gospel more accessible and memorable.

The cards helped him structure his lessons more effectively, allowing him to focus on connecting with his students rather than struggling with story structure and preparation.

What made the difference

Drew's experience shows how Storyteller Tactics solves real problems for educators and communicators. The cards provide instant access to proven storytelling frameworks, reducing preparation time whilst maintaining quality. The distilled format, in particular, helped him access wisdom quickly without getting lost in lengthy books.

How Drew uses Storyteller Tactics in practice

Drew selects a structure card to frame a sermon—often No Easy Way when he wants to normalise struggle and growth. He writes one sentence for each beat (set‑up, difficulty, perseverance, renewal), then layers scripture and lived examples. Before recording, he checks a hook card to craft an opening that meets students where they are: a question, a contrast, or a short story.

For small‑group sessions, he picks a discussion card to create reflection prompts, which makes participation feel natural rather than forced.

Who this helps
