Is Workshop Tactics worth it?

Ruy C Aguilar discovered that Workshop Tactics and Storyteller Tactics could help him bridge the gap between analytical thinking and persuasive communication. As a Tableau Evangelist at Keyrus with a background in data and analytics, he needed tools to transform his fact-based presentations into compelling stories that would drive action. The cards became his framework for connecting with audiences on an emotional level.

"The framework is helping me really understand how to connect the dots"

Why Ruy needed better storytelling tools

Ruy C Aguilar is a Tableau Evangelist at Keyrus. He studied at Purdue University, lives in Atlanta and has a career spanning audit, finance, operations and enablement. He co‑founded the Comunidatos (Latino/Hispanic Tableau User Group) and FinServ TUG. After taking a personality test that revealed he scored very high on analytical thinking but very low on persuasive communication, he realised he needed to develop his storytelling skills to better connect with his audience and drive action.

"The framework is helping me really understand how to connect the dots. What are the steps that I need to take to craft those stories, to prepare those stories, and to connect with people. The first card I use is called Universal Stories. I needed something quick. I already had a presentation together. I knew I wanted a story in there."

Hi, my name is Ruy Aguilar. I'm going to tell you why I purchased Storyteller Tactics and Workshop Tactics from Pip Decks and why you should do that too. I work in data and analytics, and about six years ago, I took a personality test, scored very, very high on the analytical side, not surprising, but scored very low on the persuasive side. To me, that was a little bit mind boggling because at that time I thought, well, if I'm telling facts in my stories, then those facts should drive action, right?

But I was very wrong. So at that same time, people from sales had taken the test, and they were scoring very high on the persuasive side. And I started talking to a couple of them and noticing what they were very good at. They were very good at telling stories, and those stories were connecting with the emotion of the people that they were talking to, and those emotions were driving and closing those sales. So I said, well, that's incredible, but how do I learn that skill?

I thought it was natural for them. So I said, well, maybe it's more of an art than a science. Come to figure a couple weeks ago, I find this framework, and the framework is helping me really understand how to connect the dots. What are the steps that I need to take to craft those stories, to prepare those stories, and to connect with people.

The first card I use is called Universal Stories. I needed something quick. I already had a presentation together. I knew I wanted a story in there. I had already the idea of that story. I didn't want to overly complicate it or get too creative, so I thought this card would work. It did the trick. I was more confident it came across. I got a lot of great feedback from it. I encourage you to look at this product.

From analytical thinking to emotional connection

Ruy's journey began with a personality test that revealed a significant gap between his analytical and persuasive skills. As a data professional, he initially believed that facts alone should drive action, but he discovered that emotional connection through storytelling was the key to persuasion. This realisation led him to seek out tools that could help him develop his storytelling abilities.

His experience demonstrates how Storyteller Tactics provides a structured framework for analytical thinkers to develop their persuasive communication skills. The cards helped him understand that storytelling is both an art and a science that can be learned and applied systematically.

The data professional's communication challenge

Data professionals and analysts often struggle to communicate their insights in ways that drive action. They may have excellent analytical skills but lack the persuasive communication techniques needed to connect with their audience on an emotional level. Ruy found that Storyteller Tactics gave him the tools to transform his fact-based presentations into compelling narratives that resonated with his audience.

The cards helped him bridge the gap between analytical thinking and emotional storytelling. By learning from sales professionals who excelled at persuasive communication, he discovered that stories that connect with emotions are more effective at driving action than facts alone.

What made the difference

Ruy's experience shows how Storyteller Tactics solves real problems for analytical professionals who need to develop their persuasive communication skills. The cards provide a structured framework for understanding how to craft stories that connect with audiences emotionally. The Universal Stories card, in particular, helped him quickly integrate storytelling into his existing presentations without overcomplicating the process.

How Ruy uses Workshop Tactics in practice

Ruy uses the Universal Stories card to quickly integrate storytelling into his data presentations. He emphasises the importance of having a framework that helps him understand the steps needed to craft compelling stories and connect with his audience.
